Why Can't I Stop Scrolling?

You can't stop scrolling because the feed never gives you a natural place to stop: there is no last post, the next one is always one swipe away, and opening the app takes no effort at all. The fix is not more willpower but a stopping point you set in advance, outside the feed, that does the stopping for you.

What makes a feed so hard to put down?

Look at how a feed is built and the answer is mostly in the design:

Is it a willpower problem?

Not really. The decision to keep going is made over and over, usually when you are tired, bored, or putting something off, which are exactly the moments you are least likely to choose to stop. Asking yourself to win that decision every few seconds is a losing setup.

Stop trying to win the decision mid-scroll. Make it before you open the app.

What are you scrolling away from?

A lot of scrolling fills a gap: boredom, avoiding a task, winding down, or not wanting to be alone with a thought. Next time you notice you are scrolling, name what you were doing or feeling right before. If it is the same thing most times, that is the real target, and no blocker touches it on its own.

How do you actually stop scrolling?

  1. Set the stopping point before you open the app. Decide how long, and put a timer somewhere you have to get up to switch off.
  2. Make opening deliberate. Move the apps off your Home Screen so you have to search for them.
  3. Cut the prompts. Turn off notifications from the apps you scroll.
  4. Use Screen Time with a passcode. App Limits and Downtime only hold if a passcode stops the one-tap Ignore Limit button. Have someone else choose it.
  5. Protect your worst hours. If you lose the most time at night or during work, block those apps during exactly those hours.
  6. Plan the replacement. Decide what you will do in the moments you usually scroll.

Where does AppBlocker fit?

Disclosure: we make AppBlocker. It is built to be the outside stopping point a feed does not have. You choose the apps and the hours ahead of time, while you are thinking clearly, and the block does the stopping.

There is no sign-up, and your app choices and screen-time data stay on your iPhone. This describes the iOS app. The Android app's data practices are described in its Google Play listing. It is free with no subscription and supported by ads. Where it is the wrong tool: it is a phone app for iPhone and Android, it does not block across a laptop or other devices, and it is not a parental-controls suite for managing someone else's phone. The honest comparison of screen time apps covers the alternatives, and the AppBlocker page has the full feature list.

What else do people ask?

Why do I keep scrolling even when I'm not enjoying it?

Because the feed never offers a natural stopping point and the next post is always one swipe away, so continuing takes less effort than stopping. Enjoyment is not what keeps you there. The lack of an ending is.

Does not being able to stop scrolling mean I'm addicted?

It means the habit is strong, which is common with apps built around endless feeds. If scrolling is hurting your sleep, work, or relationships and you cannot cut back on your own, talk to a doctor or a licensed mental health professional.

How do I stop scrolling at night?

Charge your phone outside the bedroom, schedule Screen Time Downtime for your evening hours with a passcode someone else chooses, and block the specific apps you scroll in bed.

What app stops you from scrolling?

On iPhone, Screen Time is built in and free. AppBlocker is a free app that blocks the apps you choose on a schedule or with a manual block, and its Doomscroll Protection stops you after 15 minutes in the apps you mark as time sinks.

Is AppBlocker free?

Yes. AppBlocker is free with no subscription and no paywall on blocking. It is supported by ads, needs no sign-up, and keeps your data on your iPhone.
