How to Reduce Screen Time at Night

To reduce screen time at night, pick a fixed phone cutoff time and let your iPhone enforce it: schedule Screen Time Downtime and a Sleep Focus for your evening hours, and charge the phone outside your bedroom. If you still end up scrolling in bed, block the specific apps you scroll during those hours.

Why is night the hardest time to stop?

At the end of the day you are tired, there is no next task waiting, and the phone is already in your hand in bed. A feed has no last post, so nothing tells you to stop. "Five more minutes" is easy to agree to when there is nothing else competing for the time.

So the fix is not trying harder at 11pm. It is deciding earlier in the day and setting things up so the decision holds.

How do you set a phone cutoff with Downtime?

  1. Open Settings, tap Screen Time, then Downtime.
  2. Turn on Scheduled and set the start to your cutoff time and the end to the morning.
  3. Open Always Allowed and keep only what you need at night, such as Phone and Messages.
  4. Set a Screen Time passcode, ideally chosen by someone else, so Downtime cannot be dismissed with a tap.

How does a Sleep Focus help?

A Sleep Focus silences notifications overnight, so the phone stops calling you back after you put it down.

  1. Open Settings, tap Focus, then Sleep.
  2. Choose which people and apps can still reach you. Leave social and video apps off.
  3. Turn on a schedule, or let it follow the sleep schedule you set in the Health app.

What helps that has nothing to do with settings?

How do you block the apps you scroll in bed?

Disclosure: we make AppBlocker. If Downtime feels too blunt or you keep getting past it, block just the apps you scroll at night. Choose them, set your evening hours, and reaching for one in bed shows a block screen instead of the feed.

There is no sign-up, and your app choices and screen-time data stay on your iPhone. This describes the iOS app. The Android app's data practices are described in its Google Play listing. It is free with no subscription and supported by ads. Where it is the wrong tool: it is a phone app for iPhone and Android, it does not block across a laptop or other devices, and it is not a parental-controls suite for managing someone else's phone. The honest comparison of screen time apps covers the alternatives, and the AppBlocker page has the full feature list.
