Most guides to blocking TikTok give you one method and assume it fits everyone. It doesn’t. Someone who scrolls for two hours in bed needs a different block from someone who opens TikTok forty times a day for a minute each. Start by naming when TikTok gets you, then pick the block built for that moment.
When does TikTok actually get you?
| If your TikTok habit is | Use | Why it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Scrolling late at night | Downtime, or a scheduled block for those hours | The problem has a clock time, so the block should too |
| Opening it during work or study | A scheduled block for your working hours | Keeps TikTok shut only when it costs you |
| One video turning into an hour | A long-session stop | A daily total only notices after the hour is gone |
| Quick opens all day long | A pause before opening, or moving the app off your Home Screen | The habit is the reflex, not the session |
| Wanting a full break | Delete the app and block tiktok.com | Removes both the app and the browser route |
If the hour-long session is the part you recognize, how to stop scrolling TikTok goes into why that happens. This page is about the blocks themselves.
How do you block TikTok with Screen Time?
- Open Settings, tap Screen Time, then App Limits, then Add Limit.
- Select TikTok, set the daily allowance, and tap Add. A very short allowance works as a near-block.
- While editing the limit, add tiktok.com as a website, so the browser shares the same allowance.
- Turn on a Screen Time passcode chosen by someone you trust, then turn on Block at End of Limit for TikTok.
For the night-time pattern, Downtime in the same Screen Time menu blocks everything except your Always Allowed apps during the hours you choose. Check that TikTok isn’t on the Always Allowed list.
What about deleting TikTok?
Deleting the app is the cleanest break, and a week without it shows you how often you reached for it. Two things undo it quickly: the website, and reinstalling. Block tiktok.com in Screen Time’s Content & Privacy Restrictions, and if reinstalling is the weak point, that same area has a setting to stop new apps being installed, which is easier to respect when someone else holds the passcode.
Why do TikTok blocks stop working?
Because most of them are a daily number with an escape button. TikTok sessions don’t spread evenly across the day; they happen in long runs. A one-hour daily limit can be used up entirely in one sitting, and the limit only appears once that sitting is over. The blocks that last are the ones tied to a time of day, or to the length of a single session, and the ones you can’t dismiss in the moment.
Where does AppBlocker fit?
Disclosure: I make AppBlocker. Its features line up with the habits in the table:
- Scheduled Blocks for the night-time and work-hours patterns, without shutting every other app.
- Doomscroll Protection for the hour-long session: mark TikTok as a time sink, and AppBlocker stops you after 15 minutes of use.
- Manual Block for a full break that stays on until you deliberately turn it off.
- Block Now for a set stretch, from 5 minutes to an hour.
AppBlocker is free, needs no sign-up, and is on iPhone and Android; the steps on this page are iPhone steps. For the quick-opens-all-day pattern, a pause-before-opening app such as ScreenZen or One Sec fits that reflex better than a block, and the honest comparison of screen time apps explains when to use those instead of mine. The AppBlocker page has the full feature list.
What else do people ask?
How do I block TikTok on iPhone?
Add a Screen Time App Limit for TikTok, turn on a Screen Time passcode someone else chooses, and turn on Block at End of Limit. Add tiktok.com to the same limit so the browser is covered.
How do I block TikTok at night only?
Use Downtime in Screen Time for those hours and make sure TikTok is not on Always Allowed. To block only TikTok at night and leave other apps alone, use a scheduled block in an app blocker such as AppBlocker.
Can I stop TikTok after a certain time in one sitting?
Screen Time counts a daily total, not a single session. AppBlocker’s Doomscroll Protection stops you after 15 minutes of use in the apps you mark as time sinks, including TikTok.
Does deleting TikTok block it?
It removes the app, but the website still works and the app can be reinstalled. Block tiktok.com in Screen Time and consider the setting that stops new app installs.
Is AppBlocker free?
Yes. AppBlocker is free with no subscription and supported by ads. It needs no sign-up and is on iPhone and Android.
Block TikTok when it actually gets you
Schedules for the late-night scroll, a stop after 15 minutes in one sitting, and a Manual Block for a real break. Free, iPhone and Android.
